Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a type of surgery that checks for problems in the abdomen or a woman’s reproductive system. Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin tube called a laparoscope. It is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision. An incision is a small a cut made through the skin during surgery. The tube has a camera attached to it. The camera sends images to a video monitor. This allows a surgeon to view the inside of the body without major trauma to the patient.

What is a Laparoscopy ?

Laparoscopy, also known as diagnostic laparoscopy, is a surgical diagnostic procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen. It’s a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure that requires only small incisions.
Laparoscopy uses an instrument called a laparoscope to look at the abdominal organs. A laparoscope is a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front. The instrument is inserted through an incision in the abdominal wall. As it moves along, the camera sends images to a video monitor.

Uses of Laproscopy

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling

In women who fail to ovulate because of a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome, if oral medications fail to achieve ovulation, laparoscopic drilling of the ovaries may be done.  In polycystic ovaries, the ovaries are fully of tiny follicles with fluid in it.  A few of these fluid filled follicles are punctured using an instrument introduced through the laparoscope.  This causes reduced levels of hormones called androgens and subsequently there is restoration of normal ovulation.  In the adjacent picture, the white organ is the ovary. the few brown spots seen on it are made by the electrocautery .
